Yixing Diaries I

Notes from a day in Yixing

Yesterday we went around the corner to stop in a beauty supply store where I picked up a sweet pair of knock-off Abercrombie & Fitch flipflops for 3 USD.

Lunch was a plate of thick, fresh, cut noodles at the Muslim-owned restaurant where a dubious infomercial for a spray-on weight loss product on a television in the corner captivated everyone in the room, young and old, including two children, the owners, Jia Ching and myself.

After lunch we stopped by to say hi to Mary, who owns a Taiwanese pancake/Ice Cream stand and speaks some English and with great enthusiasm. She pointed out the zit on my face and this quickly turned into a language lesson on how to spell P-I-M-P-L-E.

Picking up groceries at Da Run Fa - a consumption paradise - turned into a shopping spree for hilarious T-Shirts that boast amazing phrases like: “Drama Queen Vegas Party Monster”.

For dinner, Jia Ching fries up some of the vegetarian wontons we scored at Da Run Fa served alongside a scrumptious stirfry of ginger, garlic and bok choy (白菜). Dessert is leftovers of a yogurt ginger tart I made the night before…better the second day.
